Introduction
In this article, we’re going to show you how to set up assessment attempts. These allow you to restrict the number of times a learner is allowed to take the assessment.
Top tips before you begin
- If you have attempts enabled and a learner starts the assessment but doesn't complete it (or they leave it inactive and their session times out), an attempt will still be deducted.
- When a learner retakes an assessment, their most recent score is the one that is accepted. For example, if a learner scores 80% on their first attempt, but 40% on their second attempt, their accepted score will be 40%.
- If a learner reaches the maximum number of assessment attempts without achieving a passing score, the only way to allow them to try again is by resetting their enrolment on the course. This completely resets their course status, progress and score, and means that they will have to work through the course again.
- If you are enabling assessment attempts on a course that learners are already enrolled on, the assessment limits attempt will also apply to them. For example, if you have a learner that had already attempted the assessment three times, and then you enable assessment attempts with a limit of 3 attempts, that learner will be unable to take the assessment until you reset their enrolment.
Setting up assessment attempts
To enable assessment attempts on a course:
- If you haven’t already added an assessment to your course, add one.
- Click the ⋮ button on the assessment and then click the Assessment settings option.
- Toggle the Limit assessment attempts option to on.
- Click the Confirm button.
- From beneath the Limit assessment attempts option, use the slider to adjust how many times learners can attempt the assessment. You can choose between 1 and 10 attempts.
How assessment attempts appear to learners
When your learners take a course that has assessment attempts enabled, the Start assessment button on the assessment introduction page, and the Retake assessment button on the assessment summary page, will let them know how many attempts they have left.
What to do if a learner meets the maximum number of attempts and has not passed
If a learner has met the maximum number of attempts but not passed the assessment, their enrolment on the course will need to be reset in order for them to try again. This will mean that the learner’s status, progress and score on the assessment will be completely reset and they will need to take the course again. For help with resetting a learner’s enrolment, see our Knowledge-base article on resetting enrolments.
