Introduction
In this article, we’re going to show you how to add video blocks to your pages.
Top tips before you begin
- We recommend videos are taken landscape and not portrait, using one of the following standard resolutions, the higher the better:
1920 x 1080 pixels
1280 x 720
- You can upload your video directly to Nimble or add it from Youtube or Vimeo.
- We’d always recommend uploading your videos to Youtube or Vimeo wherever possible. Although your video will look great when hosted from Nimble, Youtube and Vimeo are video specialists – because of that, the quality will often be a little better.
- The maximum size video that you can upload to Nimble is 475MB. If your video is larger, we recommend re-encoding it to a smaller file size. Here is a free tool you can use to re-encode your video: https://handbrake.fr/
- Video file formats accepted are; 3GP, MPEG/MPG, MP4, OGG and MOV
- If your video includes audio, don’t forget you’ll want to be sure your learners have access to headphones or speakers. It’s a great idea to add a note at the beginning of your course that audio is required so that your learners can find headphones before they begin.
- For videos uploaded directly to Nimble you can add a transcript. This is important because it ensures that learners without headphones or speakers or people with hearing disabilities can still understand your content.
- NOTE - Videos uploaded to directly to Nimble Author are optimized for slower speed connections and are exported in a lower resolution when exporting to SCORM. Because of this, you may find that hosting your video on Youtube or Vimeo gives better results/resolution.

Waiting for the video to be prepared (videos uploaded to Nimble only)
When you upload your video to Nimble, you might see a grey video block on your page with a message that says Video transcoding... please wait. This happens because when you upload a video, we prepare several versions of it for learners on different connection speeds. This means that your learners will receive the best quality video possible for their Internet connection. Once it completes, the message will disappear and you'll see your video as normal.
How your learners interact with it
For videos added from YouTube or Vimeo, your learners will use the normal YouTube and Vimeo player controls.
For videos uploaded to Nimble, your learners will click the large play button in the middle of the block to begin playback. Once the video has begun, they'll have access to pause/play, volume and a progress bar they can use to skip forward/back through the video. To open or close the transcript, they click the transcript () button. They can also use the full-screen option in the bottom-right of the video to play the video in full-screen.
When playback begins, your learners will receive a lower quality version of the video initially. If we detect that they are capable of receiving a higher quality version of the video, we'll then increase the quality automatically.
