Introduction
In this article, we’re going to show you how to add file downloads to your pages.
Top tips before you begin
- File download blocks allow you to add links to PDF resources to your pages.
- File downloads are a super way of providing resources to help your learners do their jobs – processes, step-by-step guides and fact sheets.
- NOTE: There is a 10MB file size limit. So files need to be under 10MB to upload successfully.
- If your pdf file is larger than 10MB, you will need to convert it to a smaller file size. There are free to use tools available online, if you search for 'pdf compressor'. Here are a couple of useful ones to try:
- https://www.ilovepdf.com/compress_pdf - offers a choice of different levels of compression
- Adobe also has a good one, but you need to sign in (e.g. with a google, adobe or social media account) to download the compressed files.

Adding a file download block to a page
To add a file download block to a page:
- Whilst editing a page, drag and drop a File download (
) block from the Add content section of the side menu and onto the page.
- Select the file download block.
- From the toolbar, click the edit (
) button.
Entering your instructions
To enter your instructions for your learners:
- Click in the field at the top of the page.
- Enter your instructions.
You can format your question using the toolbar that appears above the text area. To apply formatting to your question text:
- Select the text you’d like to format.
- Select the format you’d like to apply from the toolbar.
The formatting options, from left to right, are:

Attaching your file
To attach your file:
- Click Choose a resource
.
- Click the
button and select the PDF file you’d like to add.
- Once the file has finished uploading, select it and click the
button.
Returning to the page
To return to the page:
- Click the
in the top-right of the screen.
How your learners interact with it
Once you’ve added a file download, your learners simply click the button to download the file.
Depending on the browser they are using and how it's set up, the .pdf file may automatically open in a new tab, or save the file.
Alternatively it may open a dialogue panel asking what they want to do with the file, with options to open or save. e.g.:
Many modern browsers come with a built in pdf viewer, which can open the pdf file in a new tab for the learner. Each of these will look slightly different depending on the browser, but they should all behave in a similar way.
Chrome
If the learner wants to save the file from Chrome's pdf viewer they can:
- Click the download button (

- Or right click in the pdf viewer and choose 'Save as...'
Then should give the file a meaningful name and select a meaningful location to save it.
Firefox
If the learner wants to save the file from Firefox's pdf viewer they can:
- Click the download button (
)
- Or right click in the pdf viewer and choose 'Save Page As...'
Then should give the file a meaningful name and select a meaningful location to save it.
Edge
If the learner wants to save the file from Edge's pdf viewer
- Click the download button (
)
- Or right click in the pdf viewer and choose 'Save'
Then should give the file a meaningful name and select a meaningful location to save it.
